Best Wood Planer -2018

Trying to find the best wood planer? It’s a tough decision because they aren’t exactly cheap and you want to get the most for your money. I’m going to help you out by doing the research on the highest rated wood planers and explain the differences. The most important thing is how your board turns out after it’s cut. You could spend a lot of money on a high dollar planer but if the board comes out with chips and grooves you’re going to be very disappointed. I’ve separated the below list out by price category for easy reference.

My advice from experience is to pick a planer with at least three blades. There are times when I’ve cut a pretty wide board of oak. As you know oak is a hardwood and it will put a strain on your planer. Also, you’ll get a better cut taking a bit bigger cut because the more pressure on the board will reduce chatter. You won’t have to worry about this with a bigger planer like the cabinet style but that comes with a cost.  “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.”

Pick your poison

With so many planers to choose from it can be hard to know which one is right for you. I’ve tried to list out since I’d buy select choices for any budget. Depending on what you plan on doing, a Goliath Cabinet style wood planer may not be right for you. The smaller planers work fantastic and any finish work is still going to need to be sanded no matter which planet you choose.

Please feel free to leave me any comments or if you have questions I will be happy to answer them. Thank you for looking and if you have a favorite planer you’d like to see on the list please let me know.

  1. What a great article Jeffrey- I love woodworking and haven’t had a decent planer – I have always used a hand planer and I am left handed which can make things a little tricky – Maybe only for me but if I could buy a DeWalt I would be away for sure
    Thank you

    • Hello and thank you.   I too am left handed.   I’ve never actually tried a hand plane and would never be without a thickness planer.
